Proof:
This social pressure is shown in the exchange between Tris and Christina when Tris says, “What is wrong with my clothes? I’m not wearing gray anymore.” and Christiana replies, “They’re ugly and gigantic” (Roth 86). Ten minutes later Tris finds herself standing in front of a mirror in the Dauntless clothing place wearing a knee-length black dress (Roth 86).
Comment:
The textbook of Child Psychology writes, “The accepted youth is one who is able to choose a moderate level of conformity”(Sutton-Smith 423). Christina is Tris’s first real friend, so her criticism of Tris’s clothes prompted Tris to choose more Dauntless approved attire. Tris never thought she would change her Abnegation appearance, however; the peer pressure to fit in with the Dauntless faction impacted her choice into getting new clothes, make up, and tattoos.
