Proof:
When Tris finds Peter working for the Erudite during the attack she chooses to shoot him and then continues to interrogate him. This can be seen when Roth writes of Tris by saying , “I shift the gun back to his head, ignoring the pang of guilt in my chest”(Roth 464).
Comment:
This moment in the novel shows the struggle between Tris’s old self versus the new identity she is developing from the Dauntless society as she makes the choice to hurt Peter for information. The Dauntless’ “no mercy” attitude has impacted the choices Tris makes when she enters the battle. Tris seems to realize the change in the choices she has been making when she says, “I traded cowardice for cruelty; I traded weakness for ferocity” (Roth 405). Tris realizes that Dauntless has changed what she believes in and what actions she decides on.
